NewsBios 30 Under 30 Awards

Since 1987, except for a two-year hiatus, the TJFR Group/NewsBios has been recognizing up-and-coming business journalists under the age of 30. These journalists have positively impacted business news coverage, often setting the news agenda not only for their own news outlets, but having served as role models for other journalists and news organizations. Many of our past recipients have grown to be among today's most influential journalists.

Carolyn Bigda, Money
Ms. Bigda was named the regular writer for Money’s Savings and Credit column and for three years has been writing the Chicago Tribune’s weekly personal finance column, Getting Started.
 
 

Katherine Boehret, Wall Street Journal - 2004
Ms. Boehret, an assistant to Walt Mossberg, early in 2007 was named a technology columnist for the paper and took over as solo writer of The Mossberg Solution, a column she had previously co-written.

 

Julia Boorstin, CNBC, 2004
Last year, Ms. Boorstin made the switch from print journalism to broadcast after leaving Fortune to join CNBC in May 2006. As an on-air correspondent covering media and entertainment, she looks at both public and influential private companies. She also pens a daily blog, Media Money.

Ms. Carter made the move from Money to BusinessWeek where in 2006 she was focusing on the food and finance industries in the Midwest reporting from the magazine’s Chicago bureau. (She recently was promoted to Department Editor for Finance and relocated to New York).

Ms. Christie is a defense contracting reporter for Dow Jones based in Washington D.C. where last year she was the first reporter ever to attend and cover the U.S. Air Force's "Corona" meetings of the service's top generals.

Ms. Clifford became the magazine’s only senior writer – the first in four years -- and penned a cover story last year on hiring.

Mr. Friedlander serves as senior writer for the publication dedicated to hedge-fund coverage and pens three to four cover stories annually including profiles of leading hedge-fund managers.

 
 

Barney Gimbel, Fortune
Mr. Gimbel is the youngest at Fortune by nearly a decade to carry the title of writer, and focuses on investigative pieces and additionally pens a column on business travel.

Matthew Herper, Forbes and Forbes.com
Mr. Herper focuses on science and medicine both for the print and online editions of Forbes and is tasked with devoting about half of his time to each.
 
 

Brian Hindo, BusinessWeek
As Department Editor for Corporate Strategies, Mr. Hindo edits company stories by bureau correspondents and writes about trends in corporate America particularly as they relate to strategy, competition or management.

Nadira A. Hira, Fortune
As a writer/reporter, Ms. Hira covers a swath of industries with the focus being on all things “young” or of her generation. She also is a correspondent for BET’s Black Carpet and also contributes to the biweekly “All in the Biz” segment on BET as well as host of other television appearances.
 
 

Amy Hoak, MarketWatch
A personal finance reporter for MarketWatch, Ms. Hoak often focuses on real estate and helps with the organization’s weekly real estate newsletter. Her stories garnered nearly 1.5 million views in 2006, putting her in the top third of all MarketWatch authors despite joining the organization well in to the year. Her feature story, The Seven Deadly Sins of Home Remodeling, was one of the most-read stories on the site all year, pulling in 282,000 views.

Tara Kalwarski, Crain's Financial Week
Ms. Kalwarski serves as data editor for the weekly and is responsible for overseeing and editing all data and research-driven content.
 
 

Eleanor Laise, Wall Street Journal - 2002
Ms. Laise works to make complex investments more understandable for small investors as she writes about mutual funds and general investing trends for the paper’s Personal Journal section.

Naureen S. Malik, Barron's Online
Just a few months after its launch, Ms. Malik became a writer for the daily online column Inside Scoop and brought an investigative bent that looks at trading patterns and such. She also edits analyst reports and pens some feature articles.
 
 

Matthew Miller, Forbes
An associate editor, Mr. Miller is responsible for overseeing a staff of 30 writers and reporters for the annual Forbes 400 Richest Americans list. Additionally, he writes about the business of vice for the magazine.

Erica Ogg, CNET
Ms. Ogg writes on consumer electronics companies and gadgets as well as hosting a daily podcast for CNET News.com. Her reporting has been described as clear-eyed, skeptical and marked by a youthful voice.

As chief correspondent in Seattle, Mr. Wakabayashi is responsible for the newswires’ coverage out of the Pacific Northwest, which includes keeping watch on Microsoft.

A special writer for the newswire, Ms. Wei covers mortgage and consumer finance companies and reported on some of the worrisome trends that later led to the closures of some “sub-prime” home-loan providers.
